ECHOES OF THE PAST

Continuing the series prepared by Denise Psailia.

A VINTAGE WINTER SCENE
A VINTAGE WINTER SCENE

This image of a very snowy Macclesfield Road, Alderley Edge was taken by former resident, George Davies [1825-1910], the date of the photograph is estimated to be 1880-1889.

George was born in St Pancras, London in 1824. He married Susannah King in Calne, Wiltshire in 1851 and they had three sons, Thomas Edmund, Charles Adrian and Gilbert Austin, all born in the London area.

Sometime between 1861 and 1871, the family moved to Alderley Edge and made their home at Lake Vale on Trafford Road. Lake Vale is now known as Osborne House. Mrs Hepworth who lived at Osborne House, also on Trafford Road, took the name with her when she moved to Lake Vale. She decided it was easier to take the house name with her than change her address.

George was in business in Manchester as a patent agent. He was, for many years an officer at the Parish Church and also an amateur photographer. There are numerous images of Alderley Edge and the surrounding area attributed to him.

When George Davies died on 2nd January 1910 it was reported he was “Alderley Edge’s oldest resident”. He was 85 years old. His funeral service was held at St Philip’s Church followed by his interment in the graveyard at St John’s Church, Lindow.
